How to Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Thinking about enhancing the curb appeal of your home? The most commonly offered curb appeal advice from experts and appraisers is to give the exterior of your home a good paint job and a few plantings of seasonal flowers to gussy up the front of your house. Buyers will instantly notice it, and appraisers will value it. Whether you’re interested in selling or just want to make some improvements for your own enjoyment, adding curb appeal will help your home make a better first impression.

Before you run out to purchase a couple of gallons of paint or extra planters we suggest you start by pressure washing the exterior surfaces of your home.

Pressure Washing Scores High Marks For Upping Curb Appeal

Pressure washing can provide and extremely cost-efficient way to increase your home’s curb appeal. Wash away years of grunge to get a better perspective on next steps. You may be pleasantly surprised by the results. Pressure washing will bring up the color of natural stone, brighten siding, revitalize wood decks, remove build up from outdoor furniture, clean masonry and brick. Pressure washing can sluff off mildew, whisk away weeds between paver stones and wash away the dirt off every surface. Aside from aesthetics, cleaning exterior surfaces helps prolong the life of your home and adds value. Experts say pressure washing can add 5 to 10 percent to the value of a house.

It’s always best to hire a professional to do the work for you. If you’re not properly trained on how to use a pressure washer you could end up damaging the surface you’re working on.

5 powerful reasons to replace your shower head.

Health Benefit

Many types of bacteria and mold thrive in moist areas like your shower head. Keeping your shower head clean, especially if you have hard water, can be very difficult to manage. It is recommended that you replace your shower head every 6 to 8 months.

“Tremendous research shows that showers can be harmful to your health, Scientists at Manchester University studied the slime that builds up inside showers and shower heads. Their research into bathroom scum found bacteria and fungi linked to a range of illnesses from Legionnaires’ and Crohn’s disease to septicaemia and skin, hair, ear and eye complaints. And in some cases, these risky illnesses can kill.”

Dr. Paul McDermott, a former Health and Safety Executive Inspector and an expert in Legionella risk control, has been monitoring the findings.  He said: “Nobody wants to stand under a shower knowing the water coming out of it is dirty. “But water from an untreated shower could contain more bacteria than you’d find in your toilet.”

“The aerosols created when you’re under the spray can send any bacteria from the water system into your lungs, onto your body and, in certain circumstances, into the bloodstream too.”

If your shower head has hard water staining and you also see a bunch of small black dots all over the shower head, it is black mold. Black mold is extremely tough to get rid of especially from the inside of the shower head.

Hydrogen peroxide is exceptional at killing bacteria, mold and fungus while vinegar is very effective at removing calcium deposits.

Here’s how to clean a shower head. You will need a bowl large enough to fit the entire shower head into it. Fill the bowl about 3/4 of the way with hydrogen peroxide. Remove the shower head and place into the peroxide. Be sure the head it is fully submerged. Allow the shower head to sit in the peroxide for an hour. Remove the shower head from the solution and rinse under warm water and dry it.

Reattach the shower head and run hot water through the shower head for 6 minutes to thoroughly rinse out the inside of the shower head.

If you have a hose attachment it should be cleaned in the same manner as the head, particularily if it is plastic.

Decreased Water Pressure

If you you are experiencing low water pressure due to an inefficient shower head you can maximize water force with innovative design options. First, check the head for a build-up of calcium deposits. Expand your home storage solutions to gain the extra space you didn’t know you had.

The marketplace has a huge assortment of affordable stylish home storage solutions designed for your urban lifestyle. Chic bins, storage benches, bookcases and wall shelves help to organize clutter. There is plenty of underutilised spaces in a home. Less square footage doesn’t mean you have to make do with less storage space. Smart solutions will help you gain the space you didn’t know you had no matter the size of your home.

Recessed Shelving

Gain extra space for the small stuff with recessed shelves that fit between existing wall studs! Think about the most unexpected places where recessed shelving could add style as well as storage. A wall at the base of the staircase or high up above a closet door or window can make an attractive display for art and collectables. A recessed shelf or niche is made to fit by using the empty space in almost any wall that is framed with two-by-four studs. The shelves fit between studs at a depth of only 4 inches but you can divide the opening into the number of shelves you need. As long as there are no wires or ducts in the way there is no limit to where you can place recessed shelving.

A catch-all for clutter

Integrate a few large decorative baskets with lids to control clutter. Choose large lightweight baskets, stackable suitcases or wicker chests as decorative items that can be easily moved from room to room as needed. Add visual interest to an unused fireplace with a basket or two. Use the space beneath a chair or accent table to tuck in a wicker chest. Easily stash clutter out of site. Toss in extra pillows, blankets, toys, books and electronics when a quick tidy up is required.

Think outside the box

Full height shelving systems that give you the flexibility to combine open shelves with drawers make great room dividers allowing for clutter to be stored away and decorative ornaments to be out on display. Half wall height backless bookcases also work as room dividers giving you that extra space for storage. Add a little spotlight below each shelf to create an art gallery vibe.

Wall mounted shelves can be the focal point of any space limited only by your imagination. Think outside the box with asymmetrical decor when it comes to adding a touch of abstract appeal to a contemporary or futuristic styled interior. Transform a feature wall with asymmetrical shapes that double-duty as display shelves to show off your favourite stuff. Finish with a multiple color combination for visual interest or to accentuate the room’s color palette. A softer monochromatic paint color combination will help elevate depth and form.

5 tips for getting your home comfort ready this season.

Fall is the ideal time to prepare for the cold climate we are destined to endure each winter. These 5 tips are less about home maintenance and more about seasonal change.

#1 Toasty Toes

If you have tiles, hardwood or concrete floors they are not only chilly underfoot in the winter they also don’t help hold in any heat. An effective way to cozy-up your home this winter is to invest in a rug or two. A well-chosen rug can help insulate the room and your feet from the cold while adding color and texture to a room. They can easily be stored away come springtime.

#2 Save Energy

For the Northern Hemisphere, earlier sunsets during the winter months means it’s time to think about cleaning or replacing dusty light bulbs and lighting fixtures. You’ll be amazed at how this simple task can brighten up your living spaces. Unclean light bulbs provide less light and reduce brightness which is a waste of energy.

On the opposite spectrum, autumn is the perfect time to install a few dimmer switches around the home. Dimming lights can provide a comfortable and inviting ambiance in a room for family gatherings or parties with friends. The extra bonus is when lights aren’t operating at full capacity they use less energy and extend bulb life.

#3 Take comfort in color

The most budget-friendly way to change up a space is with paint. Refresh your color palette for the season to create a cozy and inviting retreat from the cold. To set the mood in a room choose a color that evokes the warmth of summer days. Embrace rich and warming hues like cavern clay – a warm terracotta, olive green or blush pink. For color commitment phobics paint a smaller space or an accent wall.

To balance and unify the coloration in your freshly painted space, accessorizing is key. Look for elements that make you feel happy, go for playful patterns in bold tones or unexpected textures.

#4 Circulation

If you have ceiling fans, reversing them so that the air is being pulled up is a way to circulate heat. Running the fan’s blades in a clockwise direction will produce an updraft and push down into the room heated air from the ceiling.

#5 Turn up the heat

If you’re lucky enough to have a wood burning fireplace, stocking up on firewood will save you the panic if winter arrives earlier than expected. Keep a few logs indoors within reach of the fireplace. You can DIY furniture for a creative idea when it comes to storing firewood.

For a direct vent fireplace, clean the glass whenever you notice things starting to look a little hazy. Film can build up from minerals in the fuel. A few recommended precautions;

  • Do not use an ammonia based cleanser like oven cleaner
  • Do not use an abrasive cleanser such as Comet
  • Do not use paper towel on the glass surface

Your local dealer will be able to provide a recommendation when it comes to cleaners for your gas fireplace glass.
